MAKEUP IN SUMMER

Makeup for me is a form of self-expression and the process of applying it is so therapeutic that even on my worst days when all I want to do is sit in bed and bum around, the simple act of putting on mascara or brow gel, turns my WHOLE day around. As such it should come as no surprise that, come hail or shine, I have at least a little bit of makeup on. But when the weather gets extremely hot (as it has in the current heatwave we’re experiencing) there are certain things I do and certain things I avoid that over the years I’ve found have helped my skin maintain its health.

What I avoid:
1. Foundation & concealer: In my experience less is more in summer. Wearing foundation, concealer, blush and other base products when it is a scorching 40 degrees and you’re sweating in places you didn’t know had sweat glands, only ever ends in disaster. In these conditions, my makeup invariably melts off, regardless of the amount of setting powder/sprays I use. Sweat beads that form tend to mix with the base products and leave streaks of ‘makeup-sweat’ (10 points to gryffindor for original naming skills) on my face. So my advice: avoid base products as much as possible. But if you’re going to be spending 90% of your time in air conditioning then you can by all means go ham with your base.

2. Powder products: I find that when I use a lot of powder products and not enough cream products, the aforementioned ‘makeup-sweat’ situation happens way sooner and in a manner way more pronounced than if I used all cream-based makeup products. Cream products tend to fade away more naturally than powder products. So incorporating more cream blushes, cream bronzers, and cream highlighters is probably your safest bet.

What I do:
1. Stick to products that don’t slip and slide: Mascara and brows for me are crucial and thankfully these don’t tend to move around that much even if I am sweating on my face. Brash is the perfect option if you want to keep your brows and lashes looking good and in place all day long. My personal faev way to use brash is to use Jet black for lashes and Dark brown for the brows.

2. SUNSCREEN: Whether I want to wear makeup or not, keep it subtle or go full glam, I NEVER FORGET MY SUNSCREEN!! A non-negotiable for me is a light, non-white-cast leaving sunscreen (like SPF Juice). Wear SPF every single morning prior to applying any kind of makeup and reapply through the day as needed afterall it’s the biggest way to prevent aging, fine lines, wrinkles, spots, blemishes etc.

These may seem like subtle changes but don’t underestimate them! Try them for yourself and let me know in the comments how they work for you.

Until next time,
